I worked for around 16 hours today. In the end, I was thinking about the nature of human being vs. that of machines.

We humans are not good at creating or maintaining a complex system, no matter it is a social or a piece of information system. We are inconsistent, emotional, and temperamental, with attention span that cannot last for a few hours (maybe much shorter). On the other hand, we love to take in some risks and uncertainty for the sake of curiosity and enjoyment. We love exploration and inspiration.

Machines, in comparison, are good at system work. They can pay a consistent amount of attention and precision to every corner in the system. They are amazingly good at verification and validation of a complex system.

I do not think machines are going to replace our entire workforce or make our lives completely meaningless; instead, they are going to free us to do more creative and exploratory things. Lots of jobs we are doing now, system-building, data pipeline development, manufacturing, or driving, are by nature not suitable for human-beings. Machines, on the other hand, are not good at handling uncertainty and unpredictability. The future should be more about collaboration, instead of competition between two species.
